The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing clashes between the Liberia National Police and members of the Coalition for Democratic Change
(CDC), the major opposition political party in Liberia.
According to the largest youth body in Liberia, These events threaten the peace and stability that they have worked so hard to maintain over the years.
FLY urge the Liberia National Police to exercise maximum restraint and to approach the situation with professionalism and respect for human rights.
The Youth group emphasized that the right to peaceful assembly is a cornerstone of the Country’s democracy, and it is imperative that the police uphold such right while ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
At the same time, FLY encourage the police to engage with the protesters through dialogue and to avoid any actions that could escalate tensions.
Additionally, FLY acknowledged that it is the right of the political institution to assembly in order for them to express their views and grievances on issues, However, FLY strongly urge the CDC to do so through peaceful means.
The umbreall youth group stressed that dialogue and non-violent protest are the most effective ways to bring about positive change and ensure that their voices are heard.
Moreover, FLY also remind the Government of Liberia of its responsibility to maintain peace and stability
in the country.
The government, it stated must create an environment where all citizens can express
themselves freely and safely.
” We call on the government to take immediate steps to de-escalate
the situation and to facilitate constructive dialogue between all parties involved, nothing that the Federation of Liberian Youth stands ready to support any efforts aimed at fostering peace
and dialogue in the Country”, FLY added.
The youth body reechoed that Liberia’s future depends on the collective commitment to upholding
the principles of democracy, peace, and the rule of law.
