Monrovia, Liberia – September 18, 2025 — The Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has announced the seizure of 1,929 kilograms of compressed marijuana during a major anti-narcotics operation in District #17, Brewerville City, Montserrado County.
According to LDEA Officer-in-Charge Fitzgerald Biago, the drugs, valued at L$27.8 million (USD 146,604), were confiscated following coordinated intelligence operations.
Two foreign nationals were arrested: 38-year-old Nigerian national Umar Mohammed, alias “Degote,” and 18-year-old Sierra Leonean national Abdullah Kamara. Both suspects are currently in custody pending prosecution.
Biago stressed that the seizure “marks a major victory” in the fight against narcotics trafficking, warning that Liberia “will not be a safe haven for drug traffickers.”
Meanwhile, the LDEA has embarked on sweeping internal reforms, recalling all officers from the Roberts International Airport due to concerns of misconduct. Two are under investigation for allegedly underreporting narcotics seized.
As part of ongoing reforms, mandatory drug testing has been introduced for all officers. Six personnel in Bomi County, including five volunteers and one full-time staff member, tested positive for illicit drug use. The volunteers have been dismissed, while the employee, Roosevelt T. Kollie, has been suspended indefinitely.
Biago extended gratitude to community members, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and the media for their continued support. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of Liberia’s youth from the dangers of drug abuse.
