CMC Leader Calls on African Americans to Embrace Liberia as Ancestral Home

Annapolis, Maryland, USA — The Political Leader of the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) has called on African Americans to recognize Liberia as their ancestral home in Africa, highlighting the deep historical ties between the United States and Liberia.

Speaking at the 38th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Dinner held in Annapolis, Maryland, the Nimba County District #7 Representative reminded attendees of Liberia’s origins as a nation founded by freed slaves from the United States.

“I am happy to share the night with you, to greet you, and to let you know that always, you have a home in Africa,” the lawmaker said. “You have a place that was founded by your forefathers, a country founded by freed slaves from the United States of America called Liberia.”

He added that the celebration of Dr. King’s legacy should serve as a reminder of the power of unity among Black people worldwide. “Whether in Maryland or Monrovia, tonight as we celebrate the legacy of Dr. King, we should remember that when we choose to work together as Black people, we can achieve what we want to achieve,” he said.

In an interview with KMTV following a brief meeting with Maryland Governor Wes Moore, the CMC leader explained that his remarks were intended to encourage African Americans to view Liberia as part of their heritage. He emphasized the long-standing historical and cultural bonds between Liberia and the United States.

The lawmaker also disclosed that he is working on proposed legislation in the Liberian Legislature aimed at giving African Americans the opportunity to legally make Liberia their home. According to him, the initiative would provide easier access to economic and social opportunities in the country.

Describing his meeting with Governor Moore as fruitful, he noted that such engagements are part of CMC’s broader strategy to strengthen ties with the Liberian diaspora.

The interaction underscores CMC’s ongoing efforts to expand its support base abroad as the party prepares for the 2029 general elections. Since its establishment, CMC has been actively increasing its presence and influence within the Liberian diaspora, engaging key international figures to build strategic alliances and foster global partnerships.

Governor Wes Moore, known for his progressive leadership and advocacy for social justice, hosted the awards dinner, which honored individuals and organizations exemplifying the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The participation of the CMC leader further highlighted the party’s commitment to unity, equality, and positive change.

As the 2029 elections draw closer, CMC says it remains focused on mobilizing support both at home and abroad, positioning itself as a significant force in Liberia’s political landscape. The lawmaker was accompanied to the event by several CMC officials and diaspora members, including the party’s Global Chairman, Dr. Francein Chenoweth Richardson.
