Brooklyn Park City Council Passes Resolution Supporting Immigrant Communities

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — The Brooklyn Park City Council on Monday approved a resolution expressing support for Indigenous and immigrant communities while denouncing any infringement on civil liberties and constitutional rights.

Resolution #2026-24 reaffirms the city’s commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive community and condemns harassment, intimidation, and discrimination against immigrant residents. City leaders emphasized that all people are entitled to equal protection under the U.S. and Minnesota constitutions, regardless of race, religion, national origin, or immigration status.

The measure cites concerns about reports of harassment and profiling directed at immigrants, including questioning individuals’ status without cause and targeting workers and drivers. Council members said such actions erode trust in government institutions and threaten public safety.

Under the resolution, the council formally denounced unlawful or biased questioning, surveillance, detention, or use of force based on actual or perceived immigration status or other protected characteristics. It also affirmed that residents have fundamental rights such as freedom of movement, expression, and protection from unreasonable searches and seizures.

City officials reiterated that Brooklyn Park has “repeatedly affirmed its commitment to being a welcoming, inclusive city where all residents can live, work, worship, and travel without fear of discrimination, harassment, or unjust treatment.”

The city has previously stated it is “proud to support and serve all residents regardless of citizenship status,” noting the wide range of immigration backgrounds among those who call Brooklyn Park home.
