The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has announced the immediate expulsion of three senior members, accusing them of acts of disloyalty and violations of the party’s constitution.
In a press statement issued on Monday, February 9, 2026, and signed by National Chairman Atty. Janga A. Kowo, the party named the expelled members as:
Senator Zoe E. Pennue
Cllr. Kanio Bai Gbala
Representative Samson Weah (Sinoe County District #2)
Grounds for Expulsion
According to the statement, the decision is based on alleged violations of Sections 38, 39, 41(A), 42, 44, 45, 46, and 47 of the CDC Constitution.
Section 47 of the constitution provides that party membership may cease through:
1. Written or verbal withdrawal
2. Constructive withdrawal, including public declaration of loyalty to another political party
3. Expulsion endorsed by the National Executive Committee (NEC), or death
The CDC leadership stated that the expulsions followed nearly 18 months of conduct considered damaging to the party’s unity, credibility, and political objectives.
Alleged Alignment With Rival Party
The statement accused the expelled officials of repeatedly using public platforms to criticize and undermine the CDC, while allegedly aligning themselves with the ruling Unity Party–led government, which the opposition party claims has failed to uphold principles of good governance.
The CDC further declared that the expelled individuals “have absolutely no ties with the CDC” and cautioned the public against engaging with them on behalf of the party.
Political Tensions Rise
The expulsions come amid rising political tensions and growing speculation over shifting allegiances within Liberia’s opposition bloc.
Despite the internal shake-up, the CDC reaffirmed its commitment to its “people-centered principles” and vowed to intensify mobilization efforts ahead of the 2029 general elections.
The move marks a significant development within the party’s leadership structure and is expected to fuel further debate across Liberia’s political landscape.
