Blaine, Minn. — March 19, 2026
Minnesota United FC will make club history this summer when it hosts the Liberia National Team in an international friendly match at Allianz Field, marking a significant milestone both on and off the pitch.
The match, scheduled for Sunday, July 26 at 5:00 p.m. CT, represents the club’s first-ever international friendly and its 16th overall international matchup. The game will also coincide with Liberia’s Independence Day, adding further cultural and emotional significance to the occasion.
Speaking Thursday at the club’s training facility in Blaine, Chief Development Officer Manny Lagos described the fixture as more than just a game, emphasizing its deep community ties and broader impact.
“This is a special moment for our club and our community,” Lagos said. “Minnesota has one of the largest Liberian populations in the United States, and this match is an opportunity to celebrate that connection while bringing people together through the game of soccer.”
In a supporting statement, Wynfred Russell, Founder and Executive Director of SARX, highlighted the broader vision behind the international friendly.
“We are proud to officially announce an exciting international friendly match between Liberia’s national football team (Lone Star) and Minnesota United FC on Sunday, July 26, Liberia’s Independence Day,” Russell said. “This highly anticipated match will bring together talent from Liberia and the United States, celebrating the global spirit of football while strengthening cultural and sporting ties between our communities.”
He added, “Fans can look forward to a thrilling display of skill, passion, and sportsmanship as these two teams take the field. More details will follow soon.”
The friendly will feature Minnesota United taking on the Lone Star of Liberia, a team with a rich football history that includes appearances in the Africa Cup of Nations and a third-place finish in the 2011 WAFU Cup. Liberia has also produced global football icons, most notably George Weah, the 1995 Ballon d’Or winner and former president of the country.
Lagos noted that the match reflects the club’s commitment to growing the sport and strengthening its ties within diverse communities across Minnesota.
“We’re always looking for ways to connect authentically with our fans,” he said. “This match is not only about competition, but about honoring the cultural fabric of our region and creating a memorable experience for supporters.”
The connection between Minnesota United and Liberia runs deeper than community presence. Homegrown forward Darius Randell, who was born in Monrovia, highlights the personal ties between the club and the West African nation. Additionally, former Liberian international Johnny Menyongar previously played in Minnesota, further strengthening the bond.
Tickets for the match went on sale March 19, with presales available for season ticket members and other club affiliates before opening to the general public later in the day.
Club officials expect strong turnout for what is anticipated to be both a competitive fixture and a vibrant cultural celebration in the Twin Cities.
“This is going to be a unique and powerful event,” Lagos added. “We’re proud to host it and share it with our community.”
