MONROVIA, Liberia – August 8, 2026 – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into allegations involving the Officer-in-Charge of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitzgerald T. M. Biago, following his decision to temporarily recuse himself from the agency.
According to an Executive Mansion release issued Saturday, President Boakai acted after reviewing a communication from the Minister of Justice and Attorney General concerning Biago’s recusal.
The President directed the Justice Minister to launch what the government described as a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations and all circumstances surrounding the matter.
The Minister of Justice has been instructed to submit a detailed report to President Boakai within 48 hours.
The investigation comes amid public allegations and social media reports concerning a pickup truck allegedly linked to a narcotics suspect or trafficker and associated with the office of the LDEA Officer-in-Charge.
Biago has denied wrongdoing.
In a letter to Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, Biago requested authorization to temporarily step aside from his duties pending the investigation. He said his decision was intended to preserve the integrity of the LDEA, ensure transparency, maintain public confidence in the country’s anti-drug campaign, and prevent any perceived conflict of interest.
Biago has also pledged to cooperate fully with investigators and provide any information or documentation requested during the inquiry.
Boakai Demands Fact-Based Investigation
President Boakai said the investigation must be conducted objectively and guided strictly by the facts.
The President reiterated his administration’s position that no individual or institution is above the law as Liberia intensifies its fight against illegal drugs, organized crime, and corruption.
According to the Executive Mansion, the President will review the findings of the investigation once the report is submitted and determine what further action should be taken in the interest of justice and accountability.
The latest development comes amid heightened scrutiny of Liberia’s security and law enforcement institutions following a series of major narcotics cases and allegations involving public officials and security personnel.
President Boakai has in recent weeks ordered dismissals, suspensions, investigations, and prosecutions involving several government employees and law enforcement officers accused of connections to narcotics-related activities.
The allegation involving Biago remains unproven, and the government says the newly ordered investigation is intended to establish the facts surrounding the matter.
