A Flashback:
“The real cost of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s concentrator is “believed by independent sources to be closer to US$550 million contrary to the 1.4 billion dollars announced by the company”, says Senator Nya Twayen of Nimba County.
Nimba County, Liberia – ArcelorMittal Liberia, a subsidiary of ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel and mining company, continues to come under a series of scrutiny and criticism from both the public, and officials of government about the real cost of the recently constructed concentrator valued at $1.4 billion United States dollars.
The recent scenario emanates from Senator Nya D. Twayen of Nimba County, where ArcelorMittal Liberia carries out a major iron ore mining operation.
In a June 12, 2025 news conference, Senator Twayen, mentioned that the company’s much-publicized “US$1.4 billion” concentrator project is a financial mirage designed to enrich the multinational giant while short-changing Liberia.
The Nimba lawmaker further accused AML of inflating the figure to reduce its tax burden and avoid paying fair dividends to the Liberian people.
