An bill to repeal and amend some portions of the Local Government Act of 2018 has been introduced at the house of Representatives.
The legislative instrument seeks to give the Legislative Caucuses of each of the 15 Counties oversight responsibility of the county budget and development approval process.
The Bill titled “An Act To Repeal Section 2.2 Sub-Section̈ (e&f) of the Local Government Act of 2018, was introduced by Representative Jeremiah Sokan, during the 10th day sitting of the 2nd quarter of the 2nd Session of the 55th Legislature.
According to the Grand Gedeh lawmaker, the exclusion of the county Legislative Caucus in exercising its oversight responsibility undermines the principles of checks and balances as well as stoping effective local governance–something he believes could lead to the lack of transparency and accountability in the management of the county resources.
Following the reading of the Bill, Plenary mandated the Committees on Good Governance, Ways Means and Finance, Internal affairs and Judiciary to review the bill and report in two weeks.
Representative Sokan is hopeful that the bill will be passed in the interest of County-based development.
