Monrovia, Liberia: Health regulator – the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) on Wednesday, August 13th, 2025 concluded a five (5) year strategic planning meeting to develop a comprehensive roadmap that will guide the workings of the entity.

Under the theme: “Strengthening Regulation and Advancing Quality Healthcare through Innovation and Digital Transformation, the roundtable brought together Council members, sector stakeholders, and technical partners to define a bold and transformative agenda for implementation.

The day-long stakeholders’ session, also focused on ensuring that regulation of medical and dental practice in Liberia is not only robust, but also adaptive to the demands of modern healthcare delivery.

Dr. Ayun K. Cassell, Chairperson of LMDC, underscored the significance of internal reforms with a clear goal to buttress the existing healthcare regulatory framework, and provide a shared understanding of the journey ahead.

“The healthcare challenges of the future demand that we think beyond compliance and enforcement. We must position the LMDC as a catalyst for innovation, a guardian of quality, and a trusted partner to health professionals and the Liberian people. This retreat is about charting a clear path to achieve that vision,” Dr. Cassell said.

The discussions explored possible digital transformation mechanisms, and how they could positively impact regulatory processes, improve monitoring of healthcare givers, and foster continuous professional development in the medical and dental sectors.

In his submission at the opening of the meeting, Dr. Cassell noted, maximizing the usage of digitization will ease accessibility to healthcare licensing, improve compliance, and helps the LMDC conform to internationally accepted regulatory standards.

“From licensing to professional standards enforcement, we must embrace tools and systems that make our work more efficient, transparent, and impactful. Our goal is to strengthen public trust in the healthcare system and ensure that every Liberian has access to competent, ethical, and compassionate care,” Dr. Cassell stated.

The LMDC boss told KMTV at a local hotel, that clearly defining and structuring LMDC’s regulatory mechanism, standard operating procedures, terms of reference, will not only enhance the workings of the entity, but will attract the necessary resources to help council achieve more in healthcare regulation.

He meanwhile committed his administration to ensuring that all healthcare provides across the Country practice under what he calls, an ideal working environment.

“Our primary goal is to provide regulatory oversight for health institutions as well as healthcare providers. As a result, we will make sure all health workers work under an ideal environment”, Dr. Cassell assured.

He used the occasion to extend words of appreciation to the Minister of Health and other partners who continue to support the council in her quest to make the health sector better for all.

The 2026-2030 strategic roadmap will serve as a compass, guiding the execution of LMDC’s core functions and responsibilities from its current state to its desired future.
