MONROVIA, LIBERIA — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has rallied Liberia’s Junior Lone Star to approach its crucial semifinal encounter against The Gambia U17 with confidence, discipline and determination as the young Liberians seek qualification for the 2026 Africa U17 Cup of Nations.
In a goodwill message to the team ahead of the WAFU Zone A U17 semifinal in Senegal, President Boakai, who also serves as Liberia’s Chief Patron of Sports, assured the players, coaches and officials of his full support and said the entire nation stands behind them.
The Liberian youngsters reached the semifinal following an impressive showing in the competition, including a draw against Mali in their opening match and a victory over Guinea.
According to the President, the Junior Lone Star has already made the country proud, but now faces an even bigger challenge, with victory over The Gambia securing an automatic place at the 2026 Africa U17 Cup of Nations.
“You have already made Liberia proud,” President Boakai said. “Now, one important game stands between you and an automatic place at the 2026 Africa U17 Cup of Nations.”
The Liberian leader urged the players to recognize that they are representing more than themselves when they take to the field.
He said they are carrying the hopes and aspirations of Liberians, particularly young people across the country who look to them for inspiration.
President Boakai also used the occasion to emphasize the importance of sustained investment in grassroots sports, describing the current generation of young players as the future of Liberian football.
He said providing young athletes with proper training, support and opportunities could help produce the next generation of senior Lone Star players and strengthen Liberia’s football program.
The President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to sports development, particularly grassroots programs aimed at identifying and developing young talent across the country.
“As your Government, we remain committed to supporting sports development, especially at the grassroots level, and creating opportunities for you to discover and develop your talents,” he said.
President Boakai called on the players, coaches and officials to remain focused, united and give their best against The Gambia.
“The entire nation is behind you,” the President declared.
The semifinal represents one of the Junior Lone Star’s most important matches of the tournament, with Liberia now just one victory away from securing a place at the continental U17 championship.
