MONROVIA, Liberia – July 21, 2026 – Margibi County Senator Nathaniel F. McGill has strongly rejected a claim made by the ruling Unity Party linking the location of a recent anti-drug operation to his residence, describing the allegation as false, misleading, and politically motivated.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Office of Senator McGill condemned a July 21 Unity Party press release which alleged that a recent drug raid occurred “at a property located near the residence of Margibi County Senator Nathaniel F. McGill.”
According to the Senator’s office, the claim is inaccurate and does not reflect the facts surrounding the law enforcement operation.
The statement cited the Liberia National Police’s live broadcast of the operation, which identified the location of the suspected narcotics seizure as the VOA Community along the Roberts International Airport Highway.
McGill’s office acknowledged that he resides within the broader VOA Community but emphasized that the property where the operation was conducted is not near his residence.
“The Unity Party’s attempt to create a false association between the Senator and this law enforcement operation is irresponsible, deceptive, and unsupported by the facts,” the statement said.
Questions Why McGill Was Singled Out
The Senator’s office further argued that several other senior government officials also reside in the VOA Community, including National Security Advisor Samuel Kofi Woods II and Liberia Maritime Authority Commissioner Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr.
It questioned why the Unity Party chose to mention only Senator McGill if its argument was based solely on the fact that he lives in the same community where the operation took place.
“If the Unity Party’s reasoning is that merely residing in the same community as the location of a law enforcement operation creates an association with criminal activity, then does that same reasoning also apply” to the other officials who also reside in the VOA Community, the statement asked.
Accuses Unity Party of Politicizing Security Matter
McGill’s office accused the ruling party of attempting to exploit a serious national security issue for political purposes by associating one of the country’s leading opposition figures with an investigation in which he has “absolutely no connection.”
The statement maintained that security institutions should be allowed to conduct their work independently and professionally without political interference.
It also reaffirmed Senator McGill’s support for all lawful efforts aimed at combating drug trafficking and organized crime.
According to the statement, the Senator believes security operations must remain impartial and that public officials have a responsibility to communicate accurate information rather than politically motivated narratives.
Calls for Public Retraction
The Office of Senator McGill called on the Unity Party to immediately withdraw the statement and issue a public correction.
“Liberians deserve truthful information, not politically motivated narratives designed to mislead the public or tarnish the reputation of political opponents,” the statement said.
The office concluded by reaffirming Senator McGill’s commitment to the rule of law, the independence of Liberia’s security institutions, and political discourse rooted in truth, fairness, and accountability.
At the time of publication, the Unity Party had not publicly responded to Senator McGill’s demand for a retraction. The allegations and counter-allegations reflect the positions of the respective parties.
