MONROVIA, Liberia – July 20, 2026 – Former Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel D. Tweah Jr. has rejected a court decision overturning his earlier acquittal, describing the ruling as a setback for Liberia’s justice system and democracy while announcing that he will no longer pursue legal remedies before the Supreme Court.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page shortly after the court’s decision, Tweah criticized the ruling, asserting that it could not erase the jury’s previous verdict that found him not guilty.
“Today, Liberian justice and democracy took a gigantic step backwards, but men are prepared to resist this slide into anarchy,” Tweah wrote.
The former minister maintained that the jury’s acquittal remains part of Liberia’s legal history despite the court’s latest decision.
“No judge, no justice and no President can ever change my NOT GUILTY verdict. It is etched in the history of our country,” he stated.
Tweah described the ruling overturning the acquittal as a “kangaroo ruling,” rejecting its legitimacy.
Rules Out Supreme Court Appeal
Tweah also disclosed that he has instructed his legal team not to pursue any further legal action before the Supreme Court.
According to him, he considers his legal battle concluded with the jury’s acquittal and will not participate in any additional judicial proceedings related to the case.
“I have instructed my legal team that my legal journey has since ended with my verdict and I will not submit myself to any Supreme Court process. As such, they will file nothing before the Supreme Court,” he said.
“We Have Left the Law”
The former finance minister argued that the dispute has moved beyond the courts and into the political arena.
“We have left the law and are now in the full realm of politics,” Tweah declared.
Despite the court’s decision, he insisted that he remains “a free man” and ended his statement by reaffirming his resolve, signing off as “Samuel D. Tweah, Jr., that FEARLESS Grebo warrior.”
The statement follows the court’s decision to overturn Tweah’s earlier not guilty verdict, a development that has intensified public debate over the high-profile case.
