Under Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Liberia’s Passport Gains Strongest African Access Yet, With Push for Global Expansion Underway
MONROVIA, – New 2026 data shows Liberian passport holders now have access to 34 African destinations through visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival, and simplified arrangements, representing 64.2% of the continent.
The Liberia Passport Ranking, last updated September 11, 2026, positions Liberia 42nd out of 54 African Union member states — its strongest regional standing in recent years.
The gains are largely attributed to Liberia’s continued participation in ECOWAS free movement protocols, which guarantee visa-free travel to all 15 West African states, plus additional access to Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, and the Central African Republic.
The progress comes amid heightened diplomatic activity under Her Excellency Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who has been widely recognized for a proactive, results-driven approach to foreign policy.
Observers have dubbed her “Liberia’s International Bulldozer” for her focus on breaking down barriers to trade, mobility, and investment.
While Africa remains Liberia’s most accessible region, the report shows challenges remain globally.
Liberia’s Mobility Score stands at 57, placing it 162nd out of 199 countries worldwide.
Access to Europe, the Gulf, North America, and the Middle East remains at 0%, with prior visas required for all destinations in those regions.
Sources within diplomatic circles say the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under Minister Nyanti’s leadership, is prioritizing three key areas moving forward:
1. Bilateral visa waiver negotiations with priority partners in Asia, North America, and the Gulf.
2. Modernization of consular services to better support Liberians abroad.
3. Reciprocity diplomacy to promote balanced travel arrangements that support the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.
In a separate measure, Liberia ranked 135th globally in the “Welcoming Countries” index, reflecting ongoing government efforts to create an open environment for foreign investment, tourism, and trade.
Analysts note that leveraging the 64.2% African access rate could create new opportunities for Liberian businesses, students, and professionals to expand across the continent while MOFA builds toward broader global agreements.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to coordinate with the Liberia Immigration Service, ECOWAS, the African Union, and international partners on long-term passport and mobility reforms.
