Why no Demarcation after Census Sen. Nya D. Twayen, Jr. Questioned Census results

The Senate Committee on Public Corporation has been mandated by the Plenary of the Liberian Senate to investigate and report to the body on the situational report and updates of the 2022 Population and Housing Census conducted by the Liberia Institute for Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) in 2022.

The Senate’s mandate was predicated upon a communication from Sen. Nya D. Twayen, Jr. of Nimba County praying Plenary’s concurrence to cite the Director General of LISGIS and all relevant authorities associated with the 2022 Population and Housing Census to give a situational report and updates on the 2022 Census.

The Nimba County Senator, addressing Plenary on his communication emphasized that it has been two years since the conduct of the Census with no  action or Demarcation from the Census results.

According to the Nimba County Senator  that the importance of the Population and Housing Census which is meant to provide demographic, social and economic data for research and policy planning as well as, the provision of information on population size and distribution of the political sub-division cannot be overemphasized.

He further added  that the 2029 General and Legislative Elections is just a little over five years away as such if nothing is done with respect to the 2022 census, it is likely that said election will be conducted without  taking into account the census results.

At the same time, the Nimba County Senator stressed that given the increase in the country’s population, there’s an urgent need to have a logical  conclusion of the 2022 Census  result  so as to allow the Legislature resume its constitutional duties and responsibilities.
