The Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights has welcomed the creation of the office of War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.
OHCHR’s Resident Representative, Christian Masuka, at a round table dialogue Tuesday termed such development as an important moment for Liberia, expressing his organization’s fullest support to the establishment of court.
The UN Human Rights Office Boss encouraged the Executive Director, Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, to transform the political will into reality where the rights of the Liberian people will be prioritized.
Also forming part of the dialogue, the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission and the Independent Human Rights Commission, in separate statements, renewed their commitment in working with the War Crimes Court Office in promoting human rights and accountability.
Cllr. Alexandra Zoe, Executive Chairperson of the LACC, and Cllr. Dempster Brown, Chairperson of the Independent Human Rights Commission, both called for collaboration with the War and Economic Court Office for its success.
In a brief statement, the Executive Director of the Office for the Establishment of War Crimes Court, Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, said he sees the task as a service and was upbeat about the overwhelming support from integrity, human rights and civil society organizations.
With just two weeks in office and with the effective skeletal staff, according to Dr. Barbu, much has been done in getting WECC Office to roll out some important duties and responsibilities as enshrined in the TOR of the Executive Director.
Cllr. Barbu told the gathering that his office has started holding talks with various stakeholders, who he said are excited for the new development in the transitional justice action.
