In observance of the 109th Decoration Day, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on today, March 12, 2025 visited several grave sites including the Centennial Memorial Pavilion (the burial site of former President William V. S. Tubman), Camp Johnson Road (former President Daniel B. Warner), the Palm Grove Cemetery, and the Mass Grave on Duport Road, where fallen Liberian leaders and citizens who were involved in the Duport Road massacre of November 29, 1992, during Liberia’s first civil crisis are laid to rest.
In a brief remark at the Mass Grave Duport Road, the Liberian Leader reaffirmed his government’s commitment to upholding peace and unity, emphasizing the solidarity of reconciliation to the value placed on the lives of every Liberian.
He believes that, as part of the government’s commitment to unity, it is important to honor the efforts of those who have worked tirelessly, regardless of political affiliations or civil crises.
In response to the president’s desire to honor former presidents, he stated that the move highlights the significant roles and contributions they have made to the country.
“Every one of them served this country, and it takes true leadership to do so. Although they are no longer with us, honoring those who have passed is a reminder that when you honor those who came before you, you should also expect to be honored in return” he stated.
The Liberian Chief Executive acknowledged that while it’s prudent to honor those who have passed, unity remains essential for any nation’s progress. “Justice is meant to prevent further division and foster healing and reconciliation,”.
Decoration Day, a national holiday observed on the second Wednesday of March, is dedicated to cleaning and decorating the graves of ancestors, expressing gratitude for past generations and commemorating their contributions to society.
The day is a time for Liberians to remember and honor their past Leaders, as well as to express gratitude for their sacrifices and contributions to the nation’s development.
