MONROVIA — The Ministry of Public Works has imposed a temporary moratorium on heavy-duty cargo trucks weighing 25 metric tons and above on six designated unpaved road corridors for the duration of the 2026 rainy season, citing the need to protect national infrastructure and improve road safety.
The directive, issued Monday prohibits movement of overloaded vehicles, inclusive of cargo and vehicle weight, from July 31 to October 15, 2026 — a 75-day period when unpaved roads are most vulnerable to rapid deterioration.
Affected Corridors:
The moratorium applies to the following primary routes:
- Tapita to Zwedru — 115km, Nimba & Grand Gedeh Counties
- Zwedru to Kanweaken — 111km, Grand Gedeh & River Gee Counties
- Buchanan to Greenville — 205km, Grand Bassa, Rivercess & Sinoe Counties
- Pleebo to Barclayville — 75km, Maryland & Grand Kru Counties
- Salayea to Mendikorma — 194km, Lofa County
- Brewerville to Bopolu — 90km, Montserrado, Bomi & Gbarpolu Counties
The Ministry said the measure is within its statutory mandate to preserve critical road networks and reduce damage caused by overweight vehicles during the rainy season.
It called on transport operators, concessionaires, and logistics firms to comply strictly, warning that violations will attract punitive measures.
Ahead of implementation, the Ministry said it consulted key sector stakeholders and notified enforcement institutions, including: the Liberia National Police, Liberia Immigration Service, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of National Defense through the Armed Forces of Liberia, and the National Transport Union.
