The Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Education and Public Administration, Hon. Nyan Flomo, along with members of the Committee, on Tuesday hosted a high-level Educational Stakeholders Dialogue to solicit expert inputs on four (4) proposed draft Acts currently before the House of Representatives.
The dialogue, held under the auspices of the 55th National Legislature, brought together key actors and institutions in Liberia’s education sector to discuss and provide feedback on legislation intended to advance access, inclusivity, and quality of education across the country.
The draft legislations under review include:
- An Act to Create the Liberia Sign Language Institute
- An Act to Create the Rivercess Community College
- An Act to Elevate the Bong County Technical College to University Status
- An Act to Create the River Gee Community College
Stakeholders in attendance included representatives from the Ministry of Education, National Commission on Higher Education, West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Teachers Association of Liberia, Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS), and other sector partners.
In his opening statement, Chairman Flomo emphasized the importance of an inclusive legislative process that reflects the needs and aspirations of Liberians across all counties.
“The purpose of this dialogue is to ensure that laws we pass are informed by stakeholders’ insights and realities on the ground. We want institutions that respond to our national development goals and help bridge existing gaps in education access,” Hon. Flomo stated.
The stakeholders provided critical recommendations regarding the structure, sustainability, curriculum development, and policy alignment of the proposed institutions and programs.
The House Committee is expected to incorporate these recommendations into its final report to plenary, where the Acts will be debated and considered for passage.
This initiative underscores the Legislature’s commitment to participatory governance, educational development, and institutional expansion as part of Liberia’s broader national transformation agenda.
