PUFPIL Demands Concrete Steps Toward War Crimes Court establishment
Monrovia__ A civil society organization, People Uniting for Peace in Liberia (PUFPIL), has called on the Government of Liberia to demonstrate what it calls “political will” in establishing the War and Economic Crimes Court.
According to a release from PUFPIL, it is time for the government to take immediate and concrete steps toward operationalizing the court.
The organization underscored the need for the government to provide the necessary legal, financial, and institutional support required for the court’s establishment and effective functioning.
The group also urged the government to collaborate with international partners, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure transparency, credibility, and independence in the process.
Additionally, it called on all branches of government, including the Legislature and Judiciary, to work collaboratively to advance the legal frameworks needed for the court’s establishment.
PUFPIL maintained that any delay in submitting draft legislation through the President to the Legislature could undermine the process.
The release, signed by the group’s Acting CEO, Rev. Adolphus Capehart, further called on the international community to continue supporting Liberia’s pursuit of justice, including through technical assistance and resource mobilization efforts aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court.
