The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in persons Siobhán Mullally has called on the Liberian government to take concrete action to counter Trafficking for purposes of labor and sexual exploitation that particularly affect women and girls .
Speaking at a press briefing to release preliminary findings from recent assessment conducted, Cllr. Mullally wants Liberia to prioritize prevention of Trafficking in its developmental agenda.
“This is a key moment in development planning in Liberia and a ripe opportunity to strengthen child protection and gender equality across justice, child protection, labour, and health sector “, she re-emphasized.
Making reference to the forthcoming launch of the upcoming phases of the National Action Plan to combat Trafficking in persons, the national development plan and the United Nations Sustainable Development cooperation framework, Madam Siobhán encouraged the government of Liberia and relevant stakeholders to firmly situate prevention of Trafficking in persons and accountability within the wider development context.
At the same time, she called for action to ensure effective investigations, and access to justice, as well as prioritizing the rights of victims and ensuring victim and witness protection measures.
Meanwhile, the UN Special Rapporteur On Trafficking In Persons following her visit to Liberia is expected to present full report to UN Human Rights Council in June of 2025.
