Monrovia – Former Lone Star midfielder Theo Weeks has announced his intention to contest the Liberian presidency in 2029, igniting a polarized debate across the nation.

The announcement has sparked discussions about his potential to capture the youth vote, with some viewing him as a fresh face and others questioning his readiness for office.

Weeks, known for his creative play in European leagues, has been building a political profile through his Theo Weeks Foundation, focusing on scholarships and youth soccer development.

He has also established the Young Progressive Party (YPP), emphasizing civic education and leadership training for young Liberians.

Supporters argue Weeks brings a unique energy and policy depth to the table, distinguishing him from former President George Weah, also a football star turned politician.

Weeks’ 2029 platform centers on four pillars: Youth Empowerment, Economic Opportunity, Education Reform, and Transparent Governance.

Critics, however, question whether his celebrity status is enough to win over voters, and whether he has the necessary experience for the role.

The debate highlights the challenges Weeks faces in convincing Liberians he’s more than a sports hero.
