Liberia and JICA Deepen Health Collaboration, Strengthen Healthcare Systems

Monrovia, Friday, April 5, 2024: Liberia through the Ministry of Health, enhanced collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Deputy Head of Office, Madam Yoshimi Nakata, met with the Minister of Health Dr Louise M. Kpoto to explore avenues for strengthening collaboration between the Ministry of Health and JICA.

During the meeting, Madam Nakata provided insights into JICA’s scope of operations, highlighting the agency’s commitment to supporting healthcare infrastructure and capacity building. Specifically, JICA pledged a grant for road construction and assistance to hospitals, with a focus on enhancing maternity healthcare services.

One significant initiative discussed was the construction of a perinatal care center at John K. Kennedy Medical Hospital, identified through a 2022 survey. Additionally, plans for a new emergency center aimed at improving management in sterilization and sanitation were deliberated upon.

Madam Nakata emphasized JICA’s dedication to strengthening management capacities at both national and county levels. This includes support for County Health Team Operation Plans, monitoring, and evaluation, as well as knowledge enhancement for effective project implementation.

Furthermore, JICA announced its commitment to providing training in the 5S methodology (Sort, Shine, Set in order, Standardize, and Sustain), commonly known as Kaizen in Japanese, to health workers. Additionally, opportunities for advanced training, including PhD and master’s programs, will be extended.

In response, Dr. Kpoto conveyed gratitude to JICA for its steadfast support to the health sector, extending warm greetings on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia. She underscored the significance of public-private partnerships in addressing healthcare challenges, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to collaboration for the betterment of healthcare services in the country.
