Liberia Wraps Up Historic August Leadership of E10 at UN Security Council with Major Diplomatic Wins on Peace, Humanitarian Crisis and Multilateral Reform

NEW YORK, – Liberia has concluded its tenure as Coordinator of the Ten Elected Members, E10, of the United Nations Security Council for August 2026, marking what officials describe as a historic milestone in the country’s diplomatic resurgence on the global stage.
Serving alongside Bahrain, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, Panama, Somalia, and Pakistan, Liberia led coordination efforts among the Council’s non-permanent members and played a central role in shaping debate on several pressing international peace and security issues.
During its coordination month, Liberia hosted United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and E10 Ambassadors for a strategic luncheon focused on accelerating humanitarian interventions in Gaza and the West Bank.
Liberia also chaired the Political Coordinators’ Meeting, where members aligned positions on the political process in Libya, security challenges in West Africa and the Sahel, and issued an E10 Joint Statement on improving Security Council working methods.
Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Lewis G. Brown II, led high-level negotiations with the President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, Judge Graciela Gatti Santana.
The discussions centered on the management of judicial archives, institutional restructuring, and oversight matters involving Rwanda and Tanzania.
On humanitarian advocacy, Liberia spearheaded expert briefings on the crisis in Ukraine and issued press statements calling for the immediate release of UN and humanitarian personnel reportedly detained in Yemen.
The Liberian delegation also championed reforms to Security Council subsidiary bodies aimed at streamlining operations and strengthening coordination between the E10 and the five permanent members, P5.
In a statement at the end of its tenure, the E10 commended Liberia for its decisive leadership and ability to build consensus on the Council’s thematic priorities throughout August.
Pakistan has since assumed the E10 coordination role for September 2026.
Liberian officials say the country will continue to serve as an influential voice on the Security Council, advancing issues of peace, stability, and multilateral cooperation.
Liberia was elected to a two-year term on the UN Security Council in 2025 and is serving its second term as a non-permanent member.
