Outgoing NEC Chair Hands Over to Acting Chair, Emphasizes Continuity

Monrovia, Liberia — April 1, 2026 — The outgoing Chairperson of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC), Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, has formally handed over leadership to Acting Chairperson Mr. Jonathan K. Weedor, marking a key leadership transition at the country’s electoral body.

According to a NEC release, the turnover ceremony, held at NEC headquarters on 9th Street in Sinkor, brought together members of the Commission and staff, as Madam Browne Lansanah officially transferred responsibilities along with a comprehensive turnover note. The document included a financial report and updates on ongoing institutional activities.

During the ceremony, Madam Browne Lansanah highlighted accountability measures undertaken during her tenure, noting that a successful audit was conducted by the General Auditing Commission (GAC). She expressed appreciation to the President of Liberia for the opportunity to serve, while also thanking NEC staff, her family, and the Liberian people for their support.

She pledged her continued availability to provide guidance to the Commission and reaffirmed her willingness to serve the country in any capacity if called upon.

In his remarks, Acting Chairperson Jonathan K. Weedor described his return to the NEC as a “homecoming,” acknowledging the leadership of his predecessor and the efforts of the Commission’s management team.

Mr. Weedor called for collaboration among NEC leadership and staff, emphasizing that his mandate is to serve in the interest of Liberia. He assured stakeholders of continuity in the Commission’s work and disclosed that steps are already being taken to engage staff and implement key priorities.

The leadership transition comes at a critical time as the NEC continues efforts to strengthen electoral processes and maintain public confidence in Liberia’s democratic institutions.
