President Boakai Calls Special Legislative Session Over Urgent National Matters

Monrovia, Liberia – April 6, 2026 — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has formally called a Special Session of the 55th Legislature to address pressing national issues, including the printing of additional Liberian dollar banknotes and the passage of the 2026 Supplementary Budget.

In a communication addressed to House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, the President invoked Article 32(b) of the Constitution of Liberia, which empowers the Executive to convene or extend legislative sessions in times of urgency.

According to the letter, the Special Session will run for ten working days, beginning Thursday, April 9, 2026, and ending Thursday, April 23, 2026.

President Boakai emphasized that the session is necessary to deliberate on matters of “urgent national concern” that cannot wait until the Legislature reconvenes for its regular sitting in May.

The President acknowledged the Legislature’s adjournment sine die of the first quarter of its Third Session on March 19, 2026, noting that the next regular sitting is scheduled for May 8, 2026. However, he stressed that the urgency of current national issues requires lawmakers to return earlier.

Key items on the agenda for the Special Session include:

The printing of additional Liberian dollar banknotes The passage of the 2026 Supplementary Budget Other matters of national urgency

“These proposals are time-sensitive and cannot await the resumption of the regular session in May,” President Boakai stated, urging prompt legislative action in the interest of the nation and its people.

The President expressed confidence that members of the Legislature will give due consideration to the call and reconvene as scheduled.

The move comes amid ongoing economic and fiscal challenges, with the government seeking timely legislative approval to address financial and operational needs across key sectors.
