MONROVIA — The Liberian Senate on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, overwhelmingly confirmed Jonathan K. Weedor as substantive Chairperson of the National Elections Commission, ending his tenure as Acting Chair and positioning him to steer the country’s electoral body through future polls.
Weedor secured 23 votes in favor out of 30 senators present, following a recommendation from the Senate Committee on Autonomous Agencies.
The vote clears the path for him to lead the seven-member Board of Commissioners as NEC prepares for upcoming electoral cycles.
During his confirmation hearing, Weedor pledged to anchor his leadership on what he termed “non-negotiable principles”: strict compliance with Liberia’s Elections Law, collective responsibility among commissioners, and open collaboration with political parties, civil society, development partners, and citizens.
“As Chairperson, my guidance will be the Elections Law,” Weedor told lawmakers.
“I will strengthen the Commission through collective engagement with Commissioners, NEC staff, stakeholders, and the Liberian people, whose will we are mandated to safeguard.”
He reiterated that maintaining credibility and public trust in the electoral process remains central to NEC’s mandate as one of Liberia’s core democratic institutions.
A seasoned elections administrator, Weedor has served in multiple capacities at NEC, including as Acting Chair.
His confirmation is expected to provide institutional stability as the Commission manages voter registration, logistics, and electoral dispute mechanisms in line with constitutional timelines.
The NEC is constitutionally charged with conducting all public elections and referenda, registering voters, and ensuring the integrity of Liberia’s democratic processes.
