VOINJAMA, Lofa County — A United Nations Capital Development Fund [UNCDF] climate resilience and adaptation project is nearing completion in Lofa County, with solar-powered water systems and sanitation upgrades underway in Kolahun, Foya, and Voinjama City.

Launched on October 16, 2024, during a groundbreaking ceremony organized by the county administration, the initiative targets water security, sanitation improvements, and climate resilience across the county.

County officials say implementation is advancing and the project is expected to be completed by the end of June 2026 if current progress continues.

Key components include the installation of solar-powered water systems in Kolahun and Foya Districts to expand access to safe drinking water.

The project also covers construction of boreholes equipped with solar-powered water kiosks and the establishment of community-based water management committees to oversee operations and maintenance.

In Voinjama City, the focus is on flood mitigation and sanitation.

Activities include rehabilitation of drainage systems, clearing of waterways, and improved solid waste management through the procurement of waste collection equipment.

Project officials say the initiative prioritizes inclusivity by ensuring active participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in planning and implementation.

Community-based management structures are being formed to sustain services after completion.

County officials expressed optimism that the project will deliver long-term benefits by improving access to essential services while helping communities adapt to climate change impacts such as erratic rainfall and flooding.

The intervention aligns with Liberia’s national climate adaptation and development priorities and contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on universal access to clean water and sanitation.
