United Methodist Church Condemns Violence in Religious Dispute, Demands Justice for Attack on Congregational Leader

MONROVIA – The Human Rights Monitor of the Liberia Annual Conference, The United Methodist Church (UMC), has vehemently condemn the unprovoked and violent assault on Mr. Daniel Gongar, Council Chairperson of the New Hope United Methodist Church.

The incident occurred on Sunday, January 25, 2026, and was carried out allegedly by Matthew Zeon, an individual identified with the Global Methodist Church (GMC)—a breakaway faction consisting of a small group of former pastors and members.

The Human Rights Monitor views this attack not merely as a denominational dispute, but as an evil, demonic, and barbaric act that strikes at the very heart of religious tolerance and civil peace.

Such primitive displays of violence have no place in a modern, democratic society and represent a total disregard for the sanctity of human life and the rule of law.

”Physical violence in the name of religious disagreement is a contradiction of the very faith these individuals claim to profess,” stated Jefferson B. Knight.

“We cannot, and will not, allow the peace of our congregations to be shattered by the criminal impulses of a few.”

In a press statement released on Wednesday, the Human Rights Monitor calls upon the Liberia National Police (LNP) to act with immediate effect while also demanding the following:

The Immediate Arrest of Matthew Zeon to prevent further threats to the members of the New Hope UMC, the Ministry of Justice must ensure that the perpetrator is prosecuted to the full extent of the law to serve as a deterrent to others who believe they can resort to violence without consequence.

The United Methodist Church noted that they remains committed to the path of peace and justice among others.
