The lead campaign for the non permanent seat for Liberia at the United Nations Security Council, Amb. Sara Beysolow Nyanti said Liberia’s campaign is about more than a seat rather it is about a vision for a Security Council that is more inclusive, more effective, and more reflective of the world it serves.
According to her , It is a call to acknowledge and address historical imbalances, to empower regions historically marginalized, and to build a more just and peaceful global order.
She made the remarks in continuation of the massive campaign for Liberia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the term 2026—2027.
According to the Liberian government, The bid reflects Liberia’s unwavering commitment to global peace and security, particularly across Africa, and its enduring belief in multilateral cooperation as the cornerstone of international relations.
Providing justifiable reasons for such key achievement, Liberia as a nation that has emerged from civil conflict to become a symbol of resilience and democratic renewal, brings a unique and powerful voice to the global stage.
Among other things, Liberia seeks to leverage its experience in conflict mediation, peacebuilding, and post-conflict reconstruction to support the Council’s mandate in addressing some of the world’s most pressing security challenges, especially those confronting Africa and the Sahel region.
Additionally, Liberia’s candidacy is rooted in a call for greater equity and inclusivity within the Security Council.
Despite Africa’s vast population and its significant contribution to the United Nations, the continent remains underrepresented in both permanent and non-permanent categories.
Unlike before and in a drive to change the dynamics, Liberia joins the growing chorus advocating for reforms that reflect today’s geopolitical realities, ensuring Africa has a stronger voice in global decision-making processes.
“We believe the Security Council must evolve to truly embody the principles of fairness and representativeness,” said Foreign Minister Nyanti, “and Liberia is ready to be a strong advocate for Africa’s rightful place at the table.”If elected, Liberia will use its platform to highlight critical issues affecting Africa and the wider world, including sustainable development, climate change, poverty eradication, and food security”, Minister Nyanti re-emphasized.
Moreover, she stated that Liberia will also support coordinated international efforts to combat terrorism, violent extremism, and organized crime challenges that disproportionately impact African communities.
Amb. Nyanti historicized that Liberia’s painful past and hard-won progress have equipped the country with invaluable lessons in reconciliation, institution-building, and national healing.
According to her, These insights can serve as a guiding light for nations facing similar trials.
She assured the global villlage that Liberia stands ready to share its experience and work collaboratively with international and regional partners to foster lasting peace and stability.
Liberia , she stressed believes that no country can tackle today’s challenges alone.
Collective action, Minister Nyanti pointed out is essential especially from pandemics and climate emergencies to displacement and armed conflict.
