Liberia Calls for Restraint as UN Security Council Meets on Venezuela Crisis

New York — Liberia on Monday joined other members of the United Nations Security Council in responding to reports of a United States attack on Venezuela and the removal of its long-serving president, Nicolás Maduro, during an emergency meeting at UN headquarters in New York.

Speaking on behalf of the A3 countries — Liberia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia — Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Lewis Brown, urged restraint and called for a peaceful resolution to the unfolding crisis.

Ambassador Brown told the Security Council that the three African members align themselves with the African Union’s position, which emphasizes the immediate de-escalation of tensions in Venezuela and strict respect for international law.

He stressed that the situation in Venezuela requires a political and diplomatic solution rather than further confrontation, warning that prolonged instability could have serious consequences beyond the country’s borders.

According to Brown, continued unrest in Venezuela risks undermining regional stability and could pose broader threats to international peace and security, underscoring the need for dialogue and multilateral engagement to address the crisis.
