“Theo Weeks Is Not Our Political Leader”: COLP Denies Theo Weeks as Political Leader, Says Party Still Awaiting NEC Accreditation

MONROVIA – The Organizing Committee of the Propose Congress of the Liberian People (COLP) has refuted claims circulating on social media and in some media outlets naming Mr. Theo Weeks as the party’s Political Leader, stating that no leadership has been elected and the party remains in the accreditation process.
In a statement release Tuesday, the Committee said reports identifying Weeks as Political Leader are “false, misleading, and without any official basis.
“We state unequivocally that Mr. Theo Weeks is not the Political Leader of the Congress of the Liberian People,” the Committee declared. “Any reports, claims, or suggestions to the contrary are false.”
Accreditation and convention still pending:
The COLP said it is still a proposed political party undergoing its full accreditation process with the National Elections Commission (NEC).
Because accreditation is incomplete, the party has not reached the stage required to conduct internal elections for leadership positions.
“In line with democratic norms and our commitment to transparency, the COLP has not announced—and will not prematurely announce—any Political Leader or Standard Bearer,” the Committee stated.
It said two conditions must be met first: 1) full and final accreditation by the NEC, and 2) a duly convened National Convention.
Only at that National Convention, the Committee said, will delegates from across Liberia participate in a free, fair, and transparent election to choose the Political Leader, Standard Bearer, and other officials.
The Committee emphasized that if Mr. Theo Weeks or any other member chooses to contest for leadership at the convention and wins through the democratic process, results will be formally announced. “As it stands now, the COLP does not have a Political Leader,” it stressed.
The Organizing Committee reaffirmed COLP’s commitment to “rule of law, internal democracy, credibility, and due process,” warning that attempts to impose or speculate about leadership outside established procedures undermine those values.
“We therefore urge members of the public, supporters, and the media to rely solely on official communications from the Organizing Committee regarding developments within the COLP,” the statement concluded.
COLP said it remains focused on completing NEC accreditation and preparing an inclusive National Convention that reflects the will of Liberians.
