True Whig Party Suspends National Chairman Reginald Goodridge Over Convention Dispute

Monrovia, Liberia – The Administrative Committee of the True Whig Party has removed and suspended its National Chairman, Reginald B. Goodridge, citing multiple constitutional violations and actions that allegedly disrupted the party’s long-overdue 37th National Convention.
In a resolution approved on June 10, 2026, the committee accused Mr. Goodridge of undermining the party’s democratic processes, interfering with convention proceedings, and failing to uphold his fiduciary responsibilities as National Chairman.
The True Whig Party, Liberia’s oldest political party founded in 1869 in Clay Ashland, Montserrado County, said its constitution places the National Convention as the highest decision-making body of the party. The Administrative Committee noted that the party had failed to hold a convention for more than nine years despite constitutional requirements and several interventions aimed at resolving internal disputes.
According to the resolution, the party leadership agreed to comply with a final ruling issued by the National Elections Commission (NEC) on October 15, 2025, which directed the party to convene a National Convention to address the overdue election of national officers.
The 37th National Convention was subsequently held in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, on February 14, 2026. Party leaders said significant compromises were made to ensure a transparent and inclusive process, including granting the Convention Committee full autonomy to manage the convention without interference from either the Standard Bearer or the National Chairman.
However, the Administrative Committee alleged that Mr. Goodridge attempted to replace duly registered delegates from Montserrado, Nimba, and Lofa counties with individuals who were not recognized members of the party. The committee further accused him of unilaterally altering the list of candidates and the convention’s souvenir program.
The resolution claimed that when delegates rejected the changes, Mr. Goodridge allegedly seized control of the convention proceedings, refused to hand over authority to the Convention Chairman, and prematurely adjourned the gathering before any substantive business, including the election of party officers, could be conducted.
The committee found Mr. Goodridge in violation of several party rules, including fraudulently registering delegates outside established procedures, usurping the functions of the Convention Committee, denying partisans the right to elect party officers, and failing to uphold the party’s constitution.
Additional allegations include the co-mingling of party funds with private business operations, managing party affairs from private offices, obstructing oversight of party activities, and attempting to develop a new party constitution without authorization from the party.
The Administrative Committee described each of the alleged violations as serious enough to warrant disciplinary action. As a result, it resolved to remove Mr. Goodridge from his position as National Chairman with immediate effect and suspend him from the party.
Under the suspension, Mr. Goodridge is barred from participating in any activities or functions of the True Whig Party until further notice.
The resolution was adopted by the Administrative Committee as part of efforts to restore constitutional order, strengthen internal democracy, and ensure that party members are allowed to exercise their rights under the party’s governing framework.
Mr. Goodridge has not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the resolution.
