Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia’s Information Minister, Jerolinmek Piah has revealed that the Country has officially regained eligibility for a second compact under the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) program – a crucial step toward unlocking substantial development funding.

“This eligibility is not a check, it’s a chance,” said Minister Piah at a press briefing in Monrovia.
“We must now prepare a compelling proposal focused on key national challenges like energy and road infrastructure.”

Piah dismissed social media claims undermining the achievement, while asserting that Liberia is progressing faster than many nations on the MCC track.

“We are very hopeful. Liberia’s case will be before the MCC Board next week, and the signals we’re getting are strong.
This is a national effort, and we are nearing the point where the pause button will be replaced by the play button”. Minister Augustine Ngafuan.

Addressing reporters at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, Minister Ngafuan cited significant diplomatic and technical progress whilst expressing optimism for the board’s upcoming decision following Liberia’s engagement with the MCC.

He dispelled social media rumors which suggest that the MCC has reaffirmed $500 million grant approval for Liberia after temporary hold.

At the close of Ex-President Weah’s administrationin December 2024, MCC’s Board of Directors declared Liberia “eligible to develop a compact” in recognition of its improved performance on the MCC scorecard and ongoing governance reforms efforts that had stalled during the government transition.

Liberia passed 14 out if the MCC’s 20 indicators – a progress which sets Liberia on the roadmap for the MCC grant.

Speaking late Sunday evening, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah stated that MCC has now officially reassured the Liberian government of the grant’s approval and forthcoming disbursement.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation grant program offers several significant benefits to eligible developing countries, focusing on poverty reduction through economic growth, justice and economic empowerment amongst others.
