Monrovia, Liberia: More than 15 Liberian media professionals are currently participating in a three-day training workshop focused on improving media literacy and promoting ethical journalism in fisheries and aquaculture reporting across Liberia.
The three days media literacy event is organized by the Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project (LSMFP) in partnership with the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), and funded by the World Bank.
The intensive media working session which geared up on Wednesday, 30th October 2024, at NaFAA’s technical office on Bushrod Island, is held under the theme, “Rekindling Media Interest and Understanding the Importance of Sustainable Fisheries Management”.
Its ultimate goal is to equip Journalists with the basic knowledge and required skills necessary to uphold high standards of professionalism in dissiminating fishery and Aquaculture related information.
“This workshop follows the development of a strategic communication strategy and a specialized training manual aimed at advancing media literacy and promoting ethical journalism in fisheries reporting in Liberia” -Ruth Gbarto, LSMFP communication officer says.
LSMFP gathering underscores the significant role of Journalists in promoting sustainable fishery practices and how digital tools can be leveraged for investigative fishery reporting.
A cross section of topics such as ‘Climate Change impact on coaster communities, combating misinformation and fake news with facts checking and digital literacy, global trends in fishery and aquaculture production and opportunities and challenges in sustainable fishery management, are being treated by experts in the sector and specialized media professionals to further enlighten reporters attending the training.
In addendum to enhancing the investigative skills of media professionals, it is hoped that at the close of business, reporters would establish a media network on Fisheries and deepen their commitment to ethically and responsibily report on the sector.
LSMFP media officer also expressed optimism that Journalists will rekindle media interest in Sustainable Fisheries Management and raise awareness at all levels.
The over 15 participating journalists drawn from different media outlets are expected to promote growth in the aquaculture industry and advocate for environmental and social strategies that are essential for sustainable fishery practices in the Country.
