MONROVIA,– The Minister of Information Jerolinmek Piah has assured Liberians that the ongoing investigation into the alleged US$19 million drug case will be conducted with transparency, declaring that the Boakai administration will not repeat the handling of past drug scandals.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing Thursday, Piah directly contrasted the current probe with the controversial US$100 million cocaine case from a previous administration.
He stressed that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s government remains fully committed to a credible investigation and to holding all persons found culpable accountable in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, President Boakai is in Accra, Ghana, attending a high-level conference on implementing the landmark UN resolution on reparations for the historical injustices of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.
Liberia was among member states that supported adoption of the resolution.
In the energy sector, the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency announced progress on electricity expansion. RREA has commenced test transmission and commissioning of a 1.8-megawatt diesel power plant and 347.8 kilometers of transmission and distribution lines serving Monrovia and surrounding areas.
Electricity has already reached several institutions and communities, including the Social Security Guest House, Bomi Community College’s administrative building, nearby health facilities, and other public institutions. Residents welcomed the development, saying improved power supply will boost service delivery and economic activity.
Government said the commissioning exercise will continue as the project moves toward full operational status, with broader access expected in the coming months.
