Nimba County, June 6, 2025 – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has officially inaugurated the second phase of ArcelorMittal’s concentrator plant at the Mt. Tokadeh Mining Site in Nimba County.
Originally launched in 2012, the project was paused during the Ebola crisis and resumed in 2021 with upgraded designs and modern technology. The facility is now expected to commence full operations in June 2025.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Boakai emphasized the significance of ArcelorMittal’s journey in Liberia, highlighting its transformative impact on the mining sector and other areas of the national economy.“With profound hope,” the President stated, “this and every other investment in our country will leave a lasting impact for future generations.”
He noted that this phase is not just an upgrade but a transformative step forward—one that promises to reshape Liberia’s mining industry and deliver long-term economic and social benefits nationwide.
The President outlined several key benefits of the expansion project, including job creation, economic growth, infrastructure development, increased County Social Development Funds, educational support, healthcare improvement, local business empowerment, environmental stewardship, community engagement, as well as resettlement and livelihood restoration.
These initiatives underscore ArcelorMittal Liberia’s commitment to promoting sustainable livelihoods, particularly for individuals and communities affected by mining operations.
As one of the largest mining expansion projects in Africa, the initiative marks a historic milestone for both ArcelorMittal and Liberia.
It is projected to create over 5,000 construction jobs and secure 1,200 permanent positions for Liberians.
Additionally, ArcelorMittal reaffirmed its mission to “build a better world with smarter steels,” utilizing innovative processes that are more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible.
President Boakai concluded by assuring the public of his administration’s commitment to upholding all the terms and benefits outlined in the agreement between the Government of Liberia and ArcelorMittal.
He extended heartfelt gratitude to partners, stakeholders, workers, and the peace-loving people of Nimba County for embracing this development initiative aimed at fostering economic growth and national stability.
