MONROVIA — The Secretary General of the Progressive Students Alliance, George Fofee Dukuly, on Thursday raised alarm over recent remarks attributed to Vice President Jeremiah Koung concerning alleged “extra forces” operating outside the authority of the Armed Forces of Liberia.
Describing the claim as “not just alarming,” Dukuly said the suggestion of parallel armed groups poses a potential threat to Liberia’s democratic foundation and constitutional order.
“The Constitution recognizes only one national defense force — the AFL,” Dukuly stated.
“Any indication of forces operating beyond that structure must be thoroughly scrutinized.”
Dukuly questioned the legality and legitimacy of the alleged forces, demanding clarity on their existence, funding sources, and chain of command.
He warned that failure to provide answers could warrant a formal investigation, stressing that “accountability must remain central to democratic governance.”
The PROSA official tied the security concerns to what he described as broader governance deficits and declining political tolerance.
He cited the controversial removal of Representative Yekeh Kolubah as evidence of a government “increasingly intolerant of dissent.”
Dukuly also pointed to deteriorating sanitation conditions in Monrovia and what he characterized as an inadequate government response to citizens’ needs.
He referenced past warnings by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf about the country’s direction, arguing that current developments “reflect those concerns.”
In a call to action, Dukuly urged students and citizens to remain vigilant and engaged in defending democratic principles.
“History has never been changed by silence,” he said, encouraging peaceful civic participation and accountability.
