ECOWAS Calls For Calm; Urges NEC To Timely Work In Releasing Results

The observers network of the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS has released its first preliminary report of the November 14, 2023, Presidential Run-off election ahead of NEC’s official declaration of winners.

The team of ECOWAS Election observers under the leadership of its head of delegation Prof. Attahiru Jega, called on the National Elections Commission to diligently work to ensure the timely and transparent release of the results as part of its democracy practice.

By releasing the timely and credible results it will consolidate the enviable gains made in the handling of the 10 October 2023 general elections in a way that will ensure the stability of the country.

Prof. Attahiru Jega, at the same time called on the winners of the polls to remain magnanimous in their victory and to be graciously conciliatory to forestall any breaches of the peace to maintain the stability of the country.

“We urged the candidates, their political alliances, and supporters to be guided by the spirit of national unity, peace, and stability, and adhere to the expressed commitments made within the framework of the Revised Farmington River Declaration”.

Meanwhile, the ECOWAS election observers network says it will closely monitor the concluding phases of the electoral process, in particular, the tabulation and transmission of results from the tallying centers across the country.

In this regard, the Mission appeals to all stakeholders to refrain from any acts of incitement that would undermine the peace. It also calls on the security agents to maintain professionalism in the execution of their duties for the maintenance of order in the country.
